Conexant audio (vendor 14F1, device 5047) – no sound on Windows 7 – solved

July 2nd, 2010

Computer with a problem: HP Pavilion dv5227tx (I believe the solution is applicable to many dv5000 series laptops).

Sound device: Vendor ID 14F1, Device ID 5047

Windows 7 installs the driver but it is unable to start.
Downloaded sp35682 from HP Support site, this is a driver version 3.38.0.50 dated 03/26/2007.
Unpacked it and pointed the Driver Installation Wizard to the unpacked folder.
Driver installed fine but there were no sound from the speakers.
There was sound through the headphones.

I compared the registry settings from the original XP installation with the current ones.

The following key attracted my attention:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0007\Settings\OEM\DefaultJack]

I changed some keys back to the values they had on XP as follows:

“Wid13″=hex:01,02,01,00
“Wid14″=hex:02,00,01,00
“Wid15″=hex:0a,01,01,00
“Wid17″=hex:0a,01,00,00
“Wid1D”=hex:01,02,00,00

Restarted and bingo! Sound through the speakers!

Windows 7 on SiS650 / 315 IGP motherboard

April 24th, 2010

Had to install Windows 7 x86 on the old PC with SiS650-based motherboard. The 315 IGP is detected by Windows 7 as “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter”. With 800×600 resolution everything was working fine but when I tried to switch to 1280×1024 mode the LCD monitor went dark and showed “not recommended mode” sign. From monitor info menu I found out what graphics adapter had set the refresh rate to 87Hz and monitor wanted 60Hz.

It seems what for “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter” Windows 7 does not allow you to change the refresh rate, showing only “Hardware Default”. The graphics adapter uses the refresh rates from its VESA BIOS. I guessed what the adapter was not reading or using the monitor DDC information. Luckily on Wim’s BIOS page I found the patched BIOS for this motherboard where the Video BIOS was replaced with newer version. Flashing this BIOS solved the refresh rate issue.

Windows 7 x64 setup freezes at “Completing installation” – solved

April 22nd, 2010

In our latest case in was obviously caused by the nvidia driver interaction with GeForce 310M on Sony VPCCW25FH. To resolve, follow the steps:

  1. Immediately after first setup restart (before it is doing “Completing installation”), press F8 to invoke boot menu
  2. Select Safe Mode
  3. Setup will complain what it cannot continue in the Safe Mode, DO NOT press OK
  4. Press Shift-F10
  5. In the appearing command prompt type compmgmt.msc <Enter> and wait a while
  6. In the management console go to device manager and disable video adapter
  7. Close all windows and restart
  8. Do not enter boot menu this time, let setup continue as usual

Windows 7 available for sale

October 26th, 2009

We have all versions of Windows 7 available for sale. For some reason 64-bit versions (what many people desire) are on order from our distributor. If you are looking for ways to legalize your software that’s probably the good moment. Please remember you can always use free OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office. If you are using old specialized software (booking etc.) please consult us first about the upgrade.
