CDMA sharing with Huawei EC325 modem

March 30th, 2009 No comments

We successfully tested our 3g router with Huawei EC325 modem sold by Hutch. We did not test it yet but we believe our router will be working well with other Huawei modems like EC121 and EC220, also used by Hutch.

By the way, I was really surprised how few areas in Bangkok have EV-DO coverage. On the other hand, Hutch has CDMA pre-paid service available for tourists and people who are not living in Thailand all the time.

Organize JPEG files by EXIF data

I was looking for a better way to rename more than 20000 recovered JPEG files where original file names and folders were lost. I used to do it with our homegrown Perl script. I finally found a nice free utility: AmoK EXIF Sorter. It can rename files and move them to the folders according to your naming schema, for example:

Choosing a Notebook

March 6th, 2009 No comments

We are very often asked how to choose a notebook. In fact for a mainstream user there are not too many options to consider.

  • Do not buy the notebook with Intel or S3 graphics. Choose NVidia or ATI graphics instead.
  • Make sure the notebook has an international warranty, preferably 2 years or more.
  • Decide what’s more important for you — portability or usability. Usually it will be very tiresome for eyes to work long hours on the screen sizes less than 13″. On the other hand, 17″ screen notebook is not a nicest thing to lug around on a world tour. Most common size is 14″ wide screen.
  • If you want to watch movies from the notebook on the LCD or Plasma TV, make sure the notebook has an HDMI output and it supports HDCP.
  • Will the battery last long enough for your needs?

The brands we currently recommend and sell are ASUS, Dell and Acer.
